HISTORY OF THE DEPOT
The Augusta Historic Train Depot was constructed between the years 1909 & 1910. The Depot today is the second depot structure to occupy the space. The original Frisco Depot, destroyed by fire in 1909, was constructed in the early 1880’s. An important transportation, agriculture, and freight import and export point for the region, following the loss of the original structure the Frisco Company quickly rebuilt the depot in less than a year.
The new depot was constructed completely of brick which was reserved for important passenger depots. The brick construction was rare due to the expense of the brick, and the small town location of the depot. Consequently, the Augusta Frisco Depot may be the only brick constructed Frisco depot existing in the entire State of Kansas.
The Depot was purchased in 2005 by the City of Augusta and private investment, the 100 year old Frisco Depot is an irreplaceable cultural landmark not only for the Augusta community, but likewise contributes directly to the preservation of cultural and transportation history for the State of Kansas.
The City of Augusta received a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation to completely renovate the building. Renovation was complete in early 2017 and now houses the offices for the Augusta Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Augusta, Inc. as well as two meeting rooms open for public rental.
